What is Periodontitis?

Posted .

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, comes in a few different forms. In its latter stages, gum disease is known as periodontitis. If your gums are severely swollen or if you can see vast inflamed pouches of gums surrounding your teeth, you may have periodontitis, and you should reach out to our office for an appointment as soon as possible. Without treatment, periodontitis can result in lost teeth and harmed bones.

Periodontitis impacts about half of the population above 30 years old in the US. Unfortunately, it’s a very widespread and very serious issue. In the early stages of gum disease, bacteria inflame the gums and eat away at the pearly whites. By the time that gum disease progresses to chronic periodontitis, major harm has been done to the teeth, gums and bones. Over time, it might cause lost pearly whites, severely infected gums and bone tissue loss. This can occur in just a few patches of the oral cavity or throughout the oral cavity, and it should be treated as soon as possible.
