Many people have questions about their dental care.  Royal Dental Spa has provided this page of answers to frequently asked questions to help you understand your oral health and dental treatments.

Why is it important to floss?
While brushing your teeth will remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria from the tooth surfaces, it will not reach in-between the teeth.  The areas between your teeth are highly susceptible to decay and periodontal disease.  Flossing daily keeps these areas clean and disrupts plaque colonies from building up.

How often should I brush and floss?
You should brush your teeth at least twice a day.  We strongly recommend that you brush before going to bed at night.  Use an ADA approved soft bristle brush and fluoridated toothpaste.  Electric toothbrushes are also recommended.

You should floss daily.  If you have difficulty using conventional floss, try a floss holder.

We also recommend that you rinse your mouth with water after brushing and following meals when you are unable to brush.

How often should I have a dental exam and cleaning?
You should visit your dentist at least twice each year for a routine dental exam and cleaning.  Your dentist or hygienist may recommend more frequent visits.

How can I tell if I have gum disease?
Gum disease begins when plaque – a sticky, colorless film of bacteria, food debris, and saliva – is left on the teeth and gums.  The bacteria in plaque produce acids that inflame the gums and slowly destroy your gums and supporting bone structures.  Plaque can be avoided by brushing and flossing regularly.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • New spacing or gaps between teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Pus around the teeth and gums
  • Receding gums
  • Increased tenderness and discomfort

Are amalgam (silver) fillings safe?
Silver fillings are safe for use, and studies have failed to find any link between silver containing mercury and medical disorders.  This finding is supported by the American Dental Association, the Center for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, the FDA, and others.  The U.S. Public Health service states that the only reason not to use an amalgam filling is when the patient has an allergy to any component of this filling.  Silver fillings are a blend of copper, silver, tin, and zinc, bound together by elemental mercury.

There are many types of fillings available, including silver, composite (tooth-colored), porcelain, and gold fillings.  We encourage you to discuss your options with your dentist to determine the best type of filling for you.

How can cosmetic dentistry improve the appearance of your smile?
Cosmetic dentistry has become more and more popular as advances in dentistry and an increased interest in improving health have emerged.  Cosmetic dentistry includes dental prevention and having a healthier, whiter, and more radiant smile.  There are many cosmetic treatments available, from single-tooth restoration to a complete smile makeover.  Cosmetic treatments include:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Composite (tooth-colored) fillings
  • Porcelain dental veneers
  • Porcelain dental crowns
  • Dental implants
  • Orthodontics
  • And more!

What should I do if I have bad breath?
Bad breath (halitosis) can be caused by several different factors, including morning time, certain foods, poor oral hygiene habits, gum disease, cavities and poorly fitted oral appliances, dry mouth, tobacco products, dieting, dehydration, and certain illnesses and medical conditions.

If you have bad breath, we recommend that you:

  • Practice good oral hygiene
  • Visit your dentist regularly
  • Stay hydrated
  • Use mouthwash/rinses
  • Keep a record of what you eat, your medications, and illnesses. This can help identify the cause of your bad breath.
