Dental Care Basics

Posted .

You want to take care of your teeth, but it doesn’t have to be complicated! Here are some basics to remember as you re-evaluate your oral health care habits.

First, be sure you are cleaning your teeth twice a day. Brush using a soft-bristled toothbrush; hard bristles can damage your tooth enamel and irritates your gums. Place your brush at a 45* angle to your gums and use short, tooth-wide strokes to clean your teeth. Use gentle pressure, as scrubbing vigorously can damage gums and enamel.

You should be flossing once a day. This should take about 2-3 minutes each time. Be sure to floss between each tooth, including behind the back teeth! If conventional floss doesn’t work well for you, talk with Dr. Samy Samaan for other options that could work better. There are lots of options available, such as pre-strung flossers, water flossers, or dental picks specifically designed for that purpose.

When looking for tools to clean your teeth, look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Much more than a logo, this symbol indicated that a product has undergone thorough and rigorous testing for both safety and effectiveness. The seal guarantees that a product does what it says it does. This helps you know that you will get a product that will care for your mouth without risking damage to your mouth.

Caring for your teeth is more than simply cleaning your teeth. You need to feed them well, too! Be sure to fill your diet with nutrient-dense food, especially calcium, phosphorous, and vitamins and minerals. You can find these in dairy products, fruits, vegetables (especially dark leafy greens), and lean protein. As you fill up on these, you will be less tempted to snack on damaging foods such as sticky dried fruit and starchy potato chips.

Finally, visit your dentist regularly. This will help catch problems early, and get your teeth as clean as they can be. If you are in the Roswell, Georgia area, be sure to visit Royal Dental Spa by calling 678-878-2801 and setting an appointment. Dr. Samy Samaan and our team will be happy to help keep your smile healthy!
