Expectations When Extracting a Tooth

Posted .

Do you have a tooth that is past the repair of filling, crown, or any other treatment? A tooth extraction may be recommended by your dentist to fix your alignment. Dr. Samy Samaan and our professional staff want to help you with our updated technology while providing the best care for you and your smile.

An X-ray will first be used by your dentist to determine which approach is best when extracting your tooth. Your full dental and medical history will also be taken into consideration when deciding between a simple or surgical extraction. A simple extraction procedure is where you can view the tooth inside the mouth. It is first loosened with an elevator and typically removed with a forceps tool.

If the tooth has been damaged, broken (especially at the gum line), or it’s still underneath the gums, this is when a surgical extraction is needed, which is a little more complex. In the gums, a small incision is made and the tooth is removed with the forceps tool. If needed, the bone around the tooth needs to be removed or the tooth needs to be cut in half to remove it.

A tooth extraction may be needed if your problem includes:

– A damaged or broken tooth.

– A tooth may be removed to make room for teeth moving when you have braces.

– Additional teeth blocking other growing teeth.

– Baby teeth not coming out.

– An irreparable infection in the tooth.
